Ernest Hjalmar Johansson, born 1878,
stands accused of theft. The Plaintiff is his very own aunt. After the judge asks questions about the
defendant’s living arrangements, it is found that he lives with his mom.
Dad is in a poorhouse.

  • Don’t you do anything?
  • Sure, sometimes.
  • According the police report, you’re a
    trainee at a dye-house.
  • Yes, but not fully trained, as I was
    only there for 14 days.

He does appear to be a “fully trained”
hooligan as he stands there smirking at the judge.

The defendant’s aunt was storing a chest
filled with silverware at the house of her sister, the mother of the defendant.
One fine day, young Johansson chopped the chest open and stole the silver.

  • Why did you do such a thing? The
    judge asks again.
  • I was drunk, of course.

He was sentenced to 5 months penal
labor.
