The Tobacconists ‘carrotte” shows bullet holes from the Commune of March 18,1871.

The Carrotte has been used since the 16th century to show that a shop sells tobacco. It’s shape is roughly what that of plugs of tobacco when it was introduced to France. whole tobacco leaves were rolled and dried into a shape resembling a carrot. And of course, the Communards liked to shoot things.
